Have you eaten today?

That’s right, have you eaten today?  Take a quick inventory of the food you’ve had today.  Why did you eat?  How did you know you were hungry?   How might you feel right now if you hadn’t eaten?

Why do I ask?  In Matt 6:11 Jesus was teaching us how to pray:  “…give us this day our daily bread…”.  We ask the Lord to provide our meals because we know it is what keeps us alive and able to serve Him.  But Jesus also rebuked Satan by saying “…man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God…”Matt 4:4 

So, if we feed our bodies because it requires nourishment for life, how much more does our spirit need the bread of life for survival!!  If we go for long periods of time without having a “meal” from the Word, we become spiritually weak and lethargic.  Just as our bodies tell us they need food by sending us hunger signals, our spirit also has ways of alerting us to the fact that it’s in need of replenishment.  I see people all the time who have filled their lives with materialism, sexual immorality, depression, or anger and it’s so clear that their spirit is crying out for nourishment from the Lord.  They may find some immediate relief from the hunger with these things, but it will ultimately leave them empty and weak.

Jesus offers us a fulfillment that is so complete,  He says "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35  When we turn to the Lord to satisfy whatever hunger we have in our life, we are met with love and grace.  When we understand His love for us, we find that we are truly full.
“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Eph 3:17-19
